Dr. Robert Bernhardt, professor at East Carolina University, spent more than 30 years contributing to the ECU community including serving as Chair of both Mathematics and Computer Science Departments, as well as Director of the North Carolina Early Mathematics Placement Testing Program (NC EMPT). The NC EMPT Program provides high school students with a non-threatening appraisal of their readiness for college-level mathematics. Through Dr. Bernhardt’s leadership and the collaborative efforts of math educators, ECU faculty, and high school principals and teachers, ECU’s middle grades teacher preparation program was revamped receiving in the process a US Department of Education award.
Dr. Bernhardt passed away December 2, 2012.
