Segment One: Molten Rock
This video segment takes students on a walking tour exploring igneous rocks. The tour begins at the lava field of Idaho’s Craters of the Moon National Monument. Students learn about magma creation and the difference between intrusive and extrusive rocks. Students see instrusive rock types including batholiths, lacoliths, dikes, sills and volcanic rocks. Students learn how erosion relates to the forming of extrusive rocks including composite cones, cinder cones and shield cones. Students also see different types of lava. This video segment concludes with a look at geysers, hot springs, mudpots and fumeroles, all of which result when groundwater makes contact with magma or cooling lavas.
