NCSSM opens applications for Step Up to STEM

North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM) is now accepting applications for the 2016 Step Up to STEM summer program.

African American, Hispanic American and Native American students from North Carolina in 8th grade are encouraged to participate in the real-world challenges to improve their skills in math, science, and communication.

The program scheduled July 20-22 will offer students an opportunity to explore STEM in the Triangle while staying at the NCSSM campus in Durham.

Burroughs Wellcome Fund and Bayer Crop Science and other donors generously fund the program’s cost, which is nearly $2,000 per student.

Application submissions are due by March 13.

STEM good course for those who wish to gain a basic understanding of stem cell function and the research being done. You’ll learn concepts and some new terminology, but it isn’t overwhelmingly technical. Besides the science, you’ll also learn about the conflicting ethics surrounding such research and its present and future application. Ultimately, you’ll come away with lots of questions, and that a good thing: the best courses stimulate thought and encourage you to learn more.
