Ask Us

At the SMT Center, we want to be a resource for all things related to science, mathematics and technology education in North Carolina. To that end, we've developed an Ask Us feature. Simply use the form below to send us a question — about anything from the latest State Legislature decision on education funding to suggestions for ways to enliven your chemistry class — and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.

In fact, if we think others might benefit from your question, we may include it and the answer on this page. We will not, however, include any identifying information about you — just your question and the answer.

Questions others have asked:

Q: Please explain the No Child Left Behind legislation.
A:
The No Child Left Behind Act is the most sweeping reform of federal education policy in a generation and had bipartisan support in Congress. Essentially, the Act covers four major areas:

  • Accountability for Results — Creates standards in each state for what every child should know and learn in reading and mathematics in grades 3-8. Every child's progress will be measured every year.
  • Unprecedented State and Local Flexibility and Reduced Red Tape — provides new flexibility for states and every local school district in how they use federal education funds.
  • Focusing Resources on Proved Educational Methods — focuses educational dollars on proven, research-based approaches that will be the most effective in helping children learn
  • Expanded Choices for Parents — parents with children in chronically failing schools will be allowed to transfer their children to better-performing public or charter schools.
Q. What role does the Triangle Coalition for Science and Technology education play in the SMT Center?
A.
The Triangle Coalition will partner with the SMT Center to focus on advocacy, communication, and programmatic efforts at the national level to advance science, mathematics, and technology education for all students.
