FAQs

What is the deadline for applying?
November 15 for application and full report.

Do I have to attend a public school in North Carolina?
No, the competition is open to any U.S. citizen attending high school in North Carolina.

Are group projects allowed?
Group projects are allowed, but each member of the research team must present the research and not all team members may be selected.

If I have attended the Beijing Youth Science Creative Competition previously, can I apply again?
No

What does this cost a student?
Students are responsible for any costs associated with undertaking their research project. Student costs for the trip to Beijing are very limited: cost of obtaining U.S. passport, small gifts for Chinese student hosts, and money to buy souvenirs, if desired. All housing, meals, and transportation costs are covered by the N.C. Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education Center and the Beijing Association for Science and Technology.

What type of projects can be submitted?
Research project is defined broadly and can be an investigation in any of the STEM areas: Science (physical or life), Technology, Engineering or Mathematics.

How much time will it take me to complete a research project?
The level of projects previously successful in the NCISC have required several months of work either in research settings or in engineering environments.

I am a N.C. high school student but not a U.S. citizen. Can I apply?
No. Participants to the Beijing Youth Science Creation Competition (BYSCC) represent the U.S. at BYSCC therefore must be U.S. citizens.

Do I need to have a U.S. passport before I can apply for NCISC?
No. If selected as a participant, it is the responsibility of the student to get a U.S. passport which may include additional passport fees to get an expedited passport.
