Science, Mathematics, and Technology Competitions

The SMT Center is a strong supporter of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) competitions. STEM competitions give students an opportunity to
  • push themselves beyond textbooks,
  • solve authentic challenges,
  • work in teams,
  • and develop communication skills.
The SMT Center focuses its support on competitions that have a local, regional, and national level competition. Among the competitions that the SMT Center supports are:

North Carolina International Science Challenge - The four high school students selected to represent the United States at the Beijing Youth Science Creation Competition are
Read the abstracts of their research projects and follow their blogs from Beijing as they present their research March 23 - March 28, 2011.

North Carolina Student Academy of Science - The state Student Academy of Science was held Friday, March 25 at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. The keynote speaker for the event was Dr. Erich Jarvis, Associate Professor in the Dept. of Neurobiology and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at the Duke University Medical Center. Dr. Jarvis studies birds as a model for the evolution of language learning and his talk will be on "Brain evolution: how birds learn to sing and humans learn to talk."

North Carolina Science and Engineering Fair - The state Science and Engineering Fair was held at Meredith College March 25 - 26, 2011.

North Carolina Math Contest - The state Math Contest will be held April 14, 2011 at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics.

North Carolina Science Olympiad - The state Science Olympiad is April 29-30, 2011 at N.C. State University. The public is welcome to attend all events.

Future Cities - Davidson IB Middle School in Davidson, North Carolina took third place honors at the National Future Cities Competition. The team is comprised of Nicholas Macri, Emma Boraks, and Sharad Wertheimer with support from teacher Jay D. Hager and mentor Dane Horna of S&ME Incorporated in Charlotte, NC. Davidson Middle School received a $2,000 scholarship for that school's technology program, sponsored by IEEE-USA. http://www.futurecity.org/home_press.shtm
