The North Carolina Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education Center is a 501(3)(c) non-profit private foundation. The SMT Center received its start-up dollars from the Burroughs Welcome Fund, an independent private foundation dedicated to advancing the medical sciences by supporting research and other scientific and educational activities.

The SMT Center plans to seek future funding from other sources including foundations, business/industry, government, and individuals.
